Job description

The Director of Business Technology is a hands-on technology leader responsible for delivering and coordinating business-facing technology initiatives across the organization. This is a player/coach role with a strong emphasis on individual contribution: the Director will personally design, configure, automate, integrate, troubleshoot, and, where appropriate, develop solutions while also leading cross-functional projects and external partners. The role will establish clearer ownership for internal business applications and technology initiatives, including CRM, ERP, data and analytics, integrations, workflow automation, and other enterprise systems. Over time, the Director will help mature the roadmap, intake process, governance model, and supporting team as business needs evolve.

Key Responsibilities:

•  Hands-On Engineering and Solution Delivery:

o  Personally design, build, configure, test, deploy, and support business technology solutions, with an emphasis on practical delivery over management overhead.

o  Develop integrations, workflow automations, scripts, data transformations, reports, and lightweight applications using APIs, SQL, scripting languages, low-code tools, and native platform capabilities.

o  Troubleshoot technical blockers across applications, databases, integrations, and data flows; determine root cause and implement or coordinate durable fixes.

o  Translate business requirements into technical designs and working solutions, balancing speed, maintainability, security, and cost.

o  Review vendor or contractor technical work and provide hands-on guidance when architecture, code quality, data design, or system configuration needs improvement.

•  Business Applications and Architecture:

o  Serve as a technical owner and escalation point for business-facing applications, including CRM, ERP, analytics/data platforms, billing, integrations, and related systems.

o  Develop a practical understanding of existing application architecture, data models, interfaces, credentials, dependencies, and support requirements.

o  Define appropriate systems of record, integration patterns, data ownership, and application boundaries as the technology environment evolves.

o  Support post-implementation stabilization and continuous improvement of major platforms, including vendor management, release planning, access, documentation, and issue resolution.

o  Identify opportunities to simplify the application landscape, reduce manual work, retire legacy processes, and improve reliability.

•  Project and Program Delivery:

o  Lead business technology initiatives from discovery through implementation, including requirements, technical design, work planning, execution, testing, training, deployment, and post-launch stabilization.

o  Break initiatives into executable workstreams and allocate tasks across internal resources, contractors, implementation partners, and software vendors.

o  Establish lightweight project reporting, decision logs, risk tracking, and escalation processes appropriate to the size and complexity of each initiative.

o  Partner closely with functional leaders to define success criteria, resolve tradeoffs, and maintain momentum when projects span multiple departments or systems.

•  Roadmap, Intake, and Governance:

o  Build and maintain a prioritized backlog of internal technology needs, recognizing that the backlog will mature as ownership becomes more centralized and additional needs are uncovered.

o  Establish a practical intake and prioritization process for new requests, balancing business value, urgency, risk, dependencies, and available capacity.

o  Maintain an evolving roadmap for business technology initiatives and communicate priorities, status, resource needs, and tradeoffs to senior leadership.

o  Create clearer ownership and operating disciplines around business applications without introducing unnecessary bureaucracy.

•  Vendor and Resource Coordination:

o  Manage day-to-day delivery across external technology partners and consultants, holding vendors accountable for scope, quality, timelines, documentation, and knowledge transfer.

o  Determine when work should be performed directly, assigned to internal resources, or sourced to specialized external partners.

o  Support vendor selection, scoping, statement-of-work development, and commercial evaluation for technology initiatives.

o  Coordinate with the customer-facing technology organization when business initiatives require shared infrastructure, application knowledge, engineering support, or architectural alignment.

•  Team Development and Leadership:

o  Operate initially as a highly hands-on individual contributor while providing technical direction and day-to-day leadership across project teams.

o  Mentor analysts, administrators, developers, contractors, and business power users involved in technology delivery.

o  As needs and budget justify, help define future roles, participate in hiring, and build a lean business technology capability.

o  Promote strong documentation, ownership, technical judgment, and continuous improvement across the function.

Qualifications:

•  Approximately 8-10 years of progressive experience in technology consulting, business systems, enterprise applications, software engineering, solutions architecture, or a similarly broad technology role.

•  Demonstrated ability to personally deliver technical solutions, not solely manage teams or vendors.

•  Strong working knowledge of APIs and systems integration, relational databases and SQL, data movement/transformation, workflow automation, and modern cloud/SaaS application architectures.

•  Experience with enterprise business applications such as CRM and ERP platforms; experience with Zoho, NetSuite, Snowflake, or comparable platforms is helpful but not required.

•  Experience leading cross-functional technology projects from ambiguous business need through production implementation.

•  Ability to move comfortably between business process discussions, technical troubleshooting, project management, and executive communication.

•  Experience managing external consultants, implementation partners, or software vendors.

•  Exposure to hiring, mentoring, or managing technical resources; extensive department-management experience is not required.

•  Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to work directly in systems when needed rather than defaulting to delegation.

•  Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, or a related discipline preferred; equivalent practical experience will be considered.

Key Competencies:

•  Hands-on technical depth paired with broad systems thinking.

•  Strong ownership mentality and ability to make progress in an environment with incomplete documentation, evolving priorities, and limited dedicated resources.

•  Ability to deconstruct business processes, identify bottlenecks, and translate needs into pragmatic technology solutions.

•  Sound judgment about when to build, configure, buy, integrate, or engage a specialist.

•  Clear communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior executives.

•  Ability to earn trust across functions and introduce structure to a historically federated technology environment without slowing the business down.

Company Overview:

The Company is a payroll processing and business services provider that recently completed a merger and is modernizing its internal technology environment across CRM, ERP, data and analytics, billing, integrations, and workflow automation. The Director of Business Technology will help shape how these capabilities are owned and delivered as the organization scales.
